From DNA Center to Catalyst Center
Cisco renamed its DNA Center to Catalyst Center — the same platform, consistently developed further. Behind it sits the central management and analytics platform for Catalyst networks: switches, wireless controllers and access points, wired and wireless, in one place. It does not replace the devices, it orchestrates them: configuration still lives on switch and controller, but planning, rollout and monitoring run centrally — as an appliance in your data centre or virtually on VMware and AWS.
Zero-touch: rollouts without pre-staging
Traditionally every new switch first gets an appointment at the lab bench: load a base config, box it up, ship it. Plug and Play removes exactly that — the device is connected at its destination, reports to Catalyst Center and pulls configuration and software level automatically. A rollout project with travel costs becomes a box that anyone on site can plug in. The precondition is preparation: clean templates and a well-kept site structure — which is precisely what we build with you.
Assurance: from symptom to root cause
“The Wi-Fi is slow” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Catalyst Center continuously collects telemetry from switches, controllers and access points, condenses it into health scores per device, client and application, and shows a problem's path through the network — including time travel: what happened yesterday at 2:30 pm when the site complained? Hours of puzzling across CLI sessions become a guided investigation with context; AI-assisted baselines flag what genuinely deviates from normal instead of alerting on every outlier.
Where the limits are — and how it fits your automation
Catalyst Center is strong for Catalyst infrastructure — it is not a universal tool for every device in the building, and it does not replace a source of truth. In grown environments NetBox remains the inventory, and existing automation keeps its place through the platform's REST API: Catalyst Center owns onboarding, software waves and assurance, your pipelines keep authority over the intended configuration. We plan this division of labour explicitly — so two automations never fight each other.

Frequently asked about Catalyst Center
Do we need SD-Access for this?
No. SD-Access is an option, not a prerequisite. Catalyst Center delivers value in a classic network right away: plug-and-play rollouts, consistent software levels, compliance visibility and assurance. Fabric architectures are a possible second step — once network and processes are ready for them.
Appliance or virtual instance?
Both are common: the dedicated hardware appliance in your data centre, or the virtual variant on VMware ESXi or in AWS. The decision depends on size, sites and your infrastructure strategy — we cost both paths and give a clear recommendation.
How does licensing work?
You do not buy Catalyst Center as a separate product: access comes with the Cisco DNA or Catalyst licences of your network devices (Essentials or Advantage). Which tier unlocks which functions, and what your estate already includes, is part of our readiness phase — often more licensing lies idle than expected.
Does it replace our Ansible/NetBox automation?
No — it complements it. The proven division of labour: NetBox stays the source of truth, your pipelines render the intended configuration, Catalyst Center owns device onboarding, software waves and assurance. Its documented REST API connects both worlds instead of creating parallel structures.
We come from Cisco Prime — what changes?
Prime Infrastructure was mostly monitoring and inventory; Catalyst Center is an operations platform: it does not just watch, it rolls out, checks compliance and correlates incidents. The migration is a project with clear steps — assessment, parallel operation, moving function by function — not a switch you flip.
When do we see first results?
Build-up and discovery take days. The first tangible win usually lands after two to four weeks: consistent software levels on a pilot group and the first site onboarded via plug and play — after that it scales across the estate.
